The Fortune Sellers: The Big Business of Buying and Selling Predictions
by William A. Sherden, John Wiley and Sons, 1998

It’s hard to argue with William Sherden’s conclusions. He challenges weather predictors, doomsayers, economists, and yes – market pundits – in this engaging and engrossing book. His conclusion that our lives are more influenceable than predicable is hard to refute. A must read for any serious student of the markets.

Winner Take All : A Brutally Honest and Irreverent Look at the Motivations and Methods of Top Traders
William Gallacher, 1997. Irwin Professional Pub.

Gallacher takes aim at the myriad of charlatans hawking sure-fire trading systems – and hits them right on target. In explaining the real-world problems associated with active management, Winner Take All is a valuable addition to any trader’s library.

Metal Men : Marc Rich and the 10 Billion Dollar Scam
A Craig Copetas, Putnam, 1985 (out of print)

And you thought Gordon Gecko was bad.

Craig Copetas’ expose of tax evader Marc Rich’s rise to fame and fortune reads like the Hollywood script for Boiler Room. The book offers a rare, behind the scenes view of the over-the-counter metals business – an unregulated world of payoffs, rip-offs, and gang-land slayings. Look for it at your library or used bookstore.

Currency Forecasting : A Guide to Fundamental and Technical Models of Exchange Rate Determination
Michael R. Rosenberg, Irwin Professional Pub., 1996

The best book on currencies ever written. Explains the purpose and methodology of currency hedging in a breezy, easy to understand style. A must read for corporate finance executives and global investors.

Debt of Honor
Tom Clancy, Putnam, 1994

This book has it all – war, conspiracy, a stock market crash – and John Patrick Ryan, the only honest politician of the 20th Century. A big selling point of the book is Clancy’s insights into the global importance of equity markets. My favorite excerpt:

"It was a Friday, they all told themselves. Tomorrow was Saturday. Everyone would be at home. Everyone would have a chance to take a few deep breaths and think. That’s all that had to happen, really, just a little thought. None of it made sense. A whole lot of people had been badly hurt, but the market would bounce back, and over time those with the wit and the courage to stand fast would get it all back. If, they told themselves, if everyone used the time intelligently, and if nothing else crazy happened.

They were almost right."
